Why & How To Pray Scripture For Your Breakthrough

|

Have you ever wondered why pray scripture? After all, doesn’t God know his own word? Praying the Word of God is one of the most powerful ways that we can work towards breakthrough in our lives.

I confess, I had a nasty habit of complaining. I needed to end my constant stream of complaints.

So I began praying out scriptures on being thankful and patient.

Eventually It worked, I stopped complaining! In the process of going a chronic complainer to being a more thankful person, I discovered the power of praying scripture.

I’ve found praying scripture is a beautiful act that activates the power of God. When we pray to Him, He answers with His Word and opens up opportunities for us in ways that are more powerful than just telling Him what’s on our hearts. Even though praying to God what’s on your heart, God loves when we come to Him, and will answer us. But if you haven’t seen breakthrough it might be time to start praying scripture on a regular.

So now I invite you to learn the reasons why praying scripture is powerful and later in this article specfic tips on how to do it!

Why pray the word of God?

God’s word is one of our most powerful tools in overcoming the evil one. Three times, Satan tempted Jesus in the desert. Each time, Jesus said “It is written, followed up with different scriptures.”(Mat 4:1-10 Jesus ’ response was not to try and outwit Satan, but rather he knew the power of God’s words.

Quoting scripture worked for Jesus and it will work for us too. We can break the power of Satan by quoting and praying scripture over ourselves and our loved ones.

Ephesians 6:17 tells us that God’s word is a sharp sword that can make headway against our enemy’s schemes: “Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” The Word of God is a powerful, effective weapon that we can wield against the enemy of our soul.

Why is praying Scripture important?

Scripture is alive because God is speaking to us as we read it. It’s active too because it changes our lives when we respond in faith and obedience. (Hebrews 4:12) The word of God can be a two-way conversation between you and your creator! The Bible tells us to pray without ceasing (Luke 18:26)

Scripture is a gift from God, and when we use it as the prayer language that he has given us to speak with him, our prayers will be more powerful. We know through scripture that “the one who honors me I will honor…” (I Samuel 12:24). So we can honor God by infusing His word into our lives, situations and problems.

Praying scripture strengthens the connection between you and God. It creates a dialogue that will allow Him to speak into your life in ways you may not have thought possible before.

Pray throughout your day. When we pray scripture, we can also see what areas we are lacking in spiritual growth and we can ask the Holy Spirit to help us change into the person God made us to be.

Pray scripture for your breakthrough. When we ask the Lord to help me change. God will gently reveal certain areas that are a stumbling block to our breakthrough. God’s will lead us into the specific Bible verses we need to pray for our transformation. But remember, God loves you just where you are!

If your heart longs for spiritual transformation, try praying scripture. It just might be the tipping point for your breakthrough.

D.L Moody said, “The Scripture were not given to increase your knowledge but to transform your lives.”

How to Pray Scripture

First, open your Bible to where you left off. Or search specific topics such as love, wisdom, fear, or faith. Usually every Bible plan will include a reading for each of these topics. Another option is a search online, google, Bible verses about ______? will yield many results. Than start with step one below.

  1. Start by reading the passage and see if anything stands out or feel that God is highlighting a particular part that applies to your or anyone else in your life.
  2. Ask God to give insight on how to proceed with the passage prayerfully.
  3. Read the passage several times, if necessary.
  4. Start praying either out loud or silently whatever feels best.
  5. Journal your scripturally prayers so you can keep track to see how God will answer your prayers. Or write the date and why you prayed it in your Bible.
  6. Thank God for helping you to pray scripture over your life.
  7. Lastly, take a moment and say amen! You just prayed scripture for your breakthrough!

Example of Scriptural praying Against fear

Another effective method is taking a piece of paper, write down what you need a breakthrough/spiritual goals then list all relevant scriptures. For example if you want to stop living in fear, below is an example of how to pray scripture using, 2 Tim 1:7  Ps 34:4 Isa. 41:10 and Deut. 31:16.

Thank you, Lord, for you have not given me a spirit of fear but of power love and a sound mind. I have a sound mind, and will not believe if anyone says I’m not smart or thinking clearly. I’m so relived that You will never leave me or forsake me. I’m so grateful you are delivering me from all my fears. Thank you I don’t have to live in fear since you are My God and are helping me and you hold me with your righteous right hand.

Jesus’s shows us how to pray Scripture through Biblical Prayers

Another example of how to prayer scripture is John 17:15-21 which is beautiful prayer that Jesus prayed for all of us: “My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you keep them from the evil one.” Which echoes Psalm 121:7,”The LORD shall keep from all evil.” (ESV)

“They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.  Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth….” Repeated from two previous verses. “Your word is true”(2 Sam. 7:28) and “The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.” (Psalm 126:7)

“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.” The above passage reminds me of Isa. 62:1,”I will not be quiet, until her righteousness goes forth as brightness, and her salvation as a burning torch.

Jesus showed us how to pray scripture since He used verses from the Old Testament, as show above. We are even more blessed since we have the Old Testament including Jesus’ own words to pray scriptually.

Pray your favorite Bible verses.

Do you have a life verse that you think of often? Use that verse and transform it into a prayer.

One of my favorite verses is I believe to see the goodness of God in the land of the living (Ps. 27:13) So, I turn this verse into a scriptural prayer, God I know this situation looks bad but I thankyou for infusing your goodness into these circumstances. And I know you are working within my lifetime.

Here’s the thing, somedays I don’t feel like praying let alone. So I’ve included a list below on why I pray.

What are the reasons why we pray?

  • God loves to hear his children talk to Him.
  • God talks to Us while we pray
  • Prayer makes us more aware of God’s presence
