Prayer for Peace in the Family For a Joyful Home

I know sometimes life can feel chaotic in my home. I don’t always have the strength to keep it together. When the kids fight nonstop or there are disagreements between loved ones, how do we find and keep our peace, let alone find joy? On hard days I might pray the following prayer for peace in the family:

God, in Jesus’ name, I declare that the LOVE, JOY, PEACE, FREEDOM, and LIFE of God rests upon this home and all the people in it. I pray for the spirit of disharmony and strife to leave this home, and be replaced with unity and love for each other. Lord, help each member of this family encourage each other with words of peace. I pray we will love one another like the Lord Jesus has loved us. Thank You, Lord, for guiding each person in this family to let the peace of Christ rule in their hearts, minds, and mouths.

But I admit there were plenty of times I screamed and yelled, instead of praying. Certainly, my behavior wasn’t very Christ-like. So, I’m going to share what I’ve learned on how to prayer for peace in the family.

When I prayed for peace at home, I’ve found praying can help bring us closer. Prayer helped me stop yelling, and that’s why I’m sharing what worked for my family and hopefully yours too.

How To Pray For Peace in the Family With Words of Peace

Reading my Bible consistently showed me I wasn’t speaking words of peace in fact, my mouth was causing problems. I confess I can be a touch sarcastic and order my family around. I’d yell at my kids to tell them to stop yelling! Then I realized, I had a revelation you don’t yell at someone to stop them from yelling and who likes to be yelled at anyway? So, to break from my screaming cycle. (my mother yelled at me when I was a little too). I found and memorized the following Bible verses about the tongue.

A soft answer turns away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger. Proverbs 15:1

She opens her mouth in wisdom, And the teaching of kindness is on her tongue Pro. 31:26

Life and death are in the power of the tongue. Pro. 18:21

Jesus opened not his mouth. Isa. 53:7

Blessed are the peacemakers for they should be called the sons(or daughters) of God. Matt. 5:9

Then I’d turn the above verses into a prayer for peace in the home, as shown in the following prayer.

Prayer To Control My Tongue

Lord, in Jesus’ name, help me bridle my tongue at all times. Your word says life and death are in my tongue’s power. God help me speak life into my family. Show me when to speak and when to be silent. Help me to always speak to my family with gentleness. Let my words be kind, teaching and encouraging to those around me. Thank You Lord that I’m You call me your blessed daughter since I’m a peacemaker in my home.

How to Pray For Peace in the Family, With A Heart of Peace

Bob Jones, a prophet, clinically died and went to heaven. While Bob was in heaven, he said the Lord asked him one thing, “Did you learn how to love?” Ouch! Ever since I heard that phrase, I’d examine my heart and questioned , am I truly loving those God has placed in my life?

I do love my family!

But… many times my immediate or extended family would wound my heart by actions or words or their was the typical strife. I wanted to love those around me in the chaos of life. So , below is my how I would prayer for my family in difficult times when I wasn’t feeling very peaceful or loving.

Prayer For Loving My Family

Lord, in Jesus’ name, help me be patient and kind, not to be rude, boastful, or proud. Help me to not be easily angered and not to keep a running record of previous hurts or wrongs. Lord, help the peace of Christ rule in my heart and my mind toward my family. Help each of us clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Remind us to put up with each other and forgive one another as the Lord has forgiven us. And help me to walk within my house with a perfect heart that is filled with peace toward my family. (Cor 13-4:8 Col. 3:12-15, Ps. 101:2)

After continually praying the above prayer and meditating on “Did you learn how to love.” Honestly, I’d feel more peace, less anger and unconditional love toward my immediate and extended family.

Of course there’s still frustrating days, of teenagers snubs, rebellious children and unresponsive spouses with ear buds stuck in their ears. But little by little it’s been easier to let go of anger and bitterness replacing them with forgiveness and unconditional love.
