God’s Love for Me: Why It’s Hard to Believe

You know the verses. You know the truth. But do you live like God’s love for me is real? A gentle reflection on belief, doubt, and grace.

If God’s love for me is real, why is it so hard to believe?

That question followed me for years, especially in quiet, uncertain seasons when everything else felt shaky.

For much of my life, I believed love had to be earned.

Nothing came easily. I worked hard for confidence, fought for peace, and wrestled through thirteen years to finish my first book. Perseverance became survival. So when I gave my life to Christ, I brought that same mindset into my faith.

Yes, I believed in God’s love.
But deep down, I thought I had to maintain that love—stay spiritual enough, do enough, be enough. I assumed God’s love for me worked like everything else in my life: something to measure up to.

What I didn’t know was this liberating truth:

God’s love for me is not earned—it’s given.

And when belief feels hard, the Bible tells a very different story.

What Does the Bible Say About God’s Love for Me?

The Bible describes God’s love for me as personal, intentional, and unshakably faithful.

Consider this whisper from Isaiah:

“Can a mother forget her nursing child? … Even if that were possible, I would not forget you! See, I have written your name on the palms of my hands.”
(Isaiah 49:15–16, NLT)

This isn’t abstract affection. It’s specific. Personal. Your name is engraved on His hands.

God’s love doesn’t change when we’re tired, wandering, or unsure of our worth:

“The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease.”
(Lamentations 3:22–23, NLT)

Even when my faith feels fragile, God’s love for me remains.

How Does the Bible Describe God’s Love?

Scripture uses human language so we can grasp something divine. Throughout the Bible, we see that:

  • God’s love is compassionate

“The Lord is like a father to his children, tender and compassionate.” (Psalm 103:13)

  • God’s love is steadfast

“Nothing can ever separate us from God’s love.” (Romans 8:38–39)

  • God’s love is sacrificial

“God showed how much he loved us by sending his one and only Son.” (1 John 4:10)

This is not performance-based love.
It’s relational, consistent, and undeserved.

How Deep Is God’s Love for Me?

This is one of the most searched faith questions—and one of the most personal.

Paul prayed:

“May you have the power to understand… how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ… then you will be made complete.”
(Ephesians 3:18–19, NLT)

These are dimensions because His love exceeds what we can grasp or measure.

There were seasons when I knew this verse—but wasn’t sure it applied to me. Over time, God patiently showed me the truth:

His love doesn’t need to be proven. It needs to be received.

Examples of God’s Love in the Bible

The clearest example of God’s love for me is found in Jesus’ own words:

“There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”
(John 15:13, NLT)

God’s love is not theoretical—it’s demonstrated.

Another unforgettable picture is the parable of the prodigal son:

“While he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son…”
(Luke 15:20, NLT)

The father didn’t wait for an explanation.
He ran.

That is the posture of God’s love toward you.

What Psalms Talk About God’s Love for Me?

The Psalms overflow with reminders of how steady God’s love is:

“Your unfailing love is better than life itself.”
(Psalm 63:3, NLT)

“The Lord is good to everyone. He showers compassion on all his creation.”
(Psalm 145:8–9, NLT)

When emotions shift and circumstances change, God’s love for me remains an anchor.

Why Is It So Hard to Believe God Loves Me?

For most of us, the struggle isn’t theological—it’s emotional.

We’ve experienced rejection.
We’ve learned love can be conditional.
We’ve been taught we must earn our place.

So we project those expectations onto God.

But Scripture gently confronts that belief:

“I have loved you, my people, with an everlasting love.”
(Jeremiah 31:3, NLT)

Everlasting means it doesn’t expire when we’re still learning.

How Can I Grow in Believing God’s Love for Me?

Believing God’s love for me isn’t a one-time realization. It’s something I return to again and again.

What helped most was slowing down with Scripture:

Reading one verse at a time

Writing it out slowly

Reflecting honestly

Praying without performing

That’s where topical Bible study becomes powerful. Gathering verses around one theme—like God’s love—and staying there long enough for truth to sink in.

God’s Love for Me Is Steadier Than My Feelings

My feelings shift.
My confidence cracks.
My faith wobbles.

But God’s love for me remains unshaken.

I no longer carry the weight of performing for the God who already calls me beloved.
Believing that truth—that God’s love for me never changes—has changed everything.
